United States: accused of sexual harassment, Andrew Cuomo accepts independent investigation

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is under investigation accusing him of sexual harassment.

Under pressure, the powerful governor of New York Andrew Cuomo agreed Sunday, February 28, that an independent investigation be carried out into allegations of sexual harassment concerning him, without succeeding in extinguishing the controversy on who should carry out these investigations.

After very detailed accusations Wednesday by one of her ex-advisers, Lindsey Boylan, 36, a second ex-collaborator, Charlotte Bennett, 25, accused the governor on Saturday of having sexually harassed her in the spring of 2020 , when Mr. Cuomo had taken on the role of managing the pandemic.

The 63-year-old governor, who has ruled New York State for 10 years, first reacted by announcing that he had asked a former federal judge to conduct “a full examination” of these allegations, while refuting them. But several personalities, local elected officials but also the young Democratic star of Congress, New Yorker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  or Hawaii senator Mazie Hirono, estimated Sunday that the investigation should be conducted not by a former judge who has long worked with someone close to Mr. Cuomo, but by Democratic State Attorney Letitia James.

The prosecutor – who many believe she could run for governor in the next election slated for late 2022 – also intervened, asking Mr. Cuomo to give her the case “immediately”. Faced with these criticisms, the governor made another proposal, without however entrusting the investigation directly to Mrs. James.
