In Australia, Mayar Sherif marks the history of Egyptian tennis

The Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne and the enormous performance of the Egyptian Mayar Sherif. She qualified for the second round by dominating in two sets 7-5 7-5 the French Chloé Paquet. It is simply the first time that an Egyptian has passed a round in a Grand Slam tournament.

Simple joy, kisses to the crowd. Mayar Sherif was able to let his joy burst out on court number 6 in a Melbourne Park bathed in the sun.

At the beginning of January, however, she had to go through Dubai where the qualifications for this Australian Open were being played. Her ranking of 131st player in the world does not yet allow her to enter directly into the big picture.

The following ? Three qualifying matches won, then forty in Melbourne and a rather lenient draw: no Serena Williams or other Naomi Osaka, in the first round. She inherited from Chloé Paquet, the Frenchwoman, qualified like her. A golden opportunity that Mayar Sherif was able to seize.

She had already made a name for herself at Roland-Garros

“ It means a lot to me, this victory, this first in a Grand Slam , she was moved at a press conference. It is a mental barrier to be crossed. I am really happy and I will do everything to continue. I really enjoyed playing my first Grand Slam tournament in Paris. But I love being here in Melbourne  ”.

Mayar Sherif, born in Cairo, studied 5 years in the United States before turning professional in 2019. At Roland Garros, last September , the Egyptian came close to the feat in the first round against Karolina Pliskova the Czech, then world number 3.

Here she is this time in the second round in Melbourne where she will have a good card to play against the Slovenian Kaja Juvan 104th in the world …
