Champions League: Juve and Seville eliminated, Porto and Dortmund spin in quarters

Cristiano Ronaldo’s side won 3-2, but more was needed to make up for their loss in the first leg. Dortmund (2-2) owes its qualification to Erling Haaland

It’s a bitter victory for Cristiano Ronaldo’s side. The Juventus had won his beautiful match Champions League on Tuesday against Porto (3-2), the club is eliminated from the competition. Reduced to ten in the 54th minute, the Portuguese held their own against the Old Lady, thanks to a brace from Sergio Oliveira (19th from the penalty spot, 115th) and a first-leg match at home (2-1).

In the other match of this Tuesday of the knockout stages of the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund received Sevilla FC . Winner 3-2 in the first leg, the German club obtained a draw (2-2) synonymous with qualification for the quarters. The evening was marked by the performance of the alien from Dortmund, Erling Haaland, but also by arbitration.

A bad old lady

In Turin, supporters were waiting for Cristiano Ronaldo . But the man of the big meetings did not answer present. Despite an assist on one of the two goals of the young Federico Chiesa (23), the Portuguese must see his failure, after three disappointing seasons with Juve on the European level (one quarter, two eighths). For Andrea Pirlo’s team, the disappointment is immense, especially as in the league, it is only 3rd two points behind the leader Inter Milan … A sign that this team is in bad shape, it does not reacted only late, in overtime, with a goal from Adrien Rabiot (117th).

In the other match, records continued to rain for Erling Haaland. With ten goals this season in C1 (top scorer), 20 in the queen competition at only 20 years old (record), four consecutive braces (record), the Norwegian suffocated Sevilla as in the first leg with two more goals scored in Germany (35th, 54th from the penalty spot). He marked the match with his incredible physical impact and a little room for the Andalusian goalkeeper on his second goal.

An incredible penalty

In Dortmund , Edin Terzic’s men proved to be solid despite anguish at the end of the game after the double from Youssef En Nesyri (69th from the penalty spot, 90th + 6). If Haaland’s second goal was finally awarded from a penalty, it owes a lot to video referee assistance (VAR), which is difficult to follow in a completely insane streak early in the second half.

In order: Haaland believes he is scoring in the game after an overpowering tumble. But his goal was canceled, the referee apparently having seen a foul from the Norwegian. First rebound: the video assistants continue on a second viewing, that of a collision that occurred earlier in the Sevillian area … and award a penalty to the Germans. Haaland, again, launches, misses it, retries his chance with a strike, also stopped. Second rebound: the VAR judges that the goalkeeper was not on his line … penalty shot again … and scored by the Norwegian.

We are now awaiting the continuation of the competition with the arrival tonight at the Parc des Princes of FC Barcelona. In the other meeting, Liverpool will host Leipzig.
