North Korea: Kim Yo Jong’s warning to the United States

The publication comes as the new US Secretaries of Defense and Foreign Affairs begin a visit to Tokyo and Seoul.

Last week,  the United States  and South Korea began joint military maneuvers. According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, Kim Yo Jong said in Rodong Sinmun that she was offering “advice to the new American administration which is trying to spread a smell of gunpowder over our country” before adding “if you want to rest easy for the next four years (duration of an American presidential mandate), you would do well not to undertake anything which makes you lose sleep “.

Seoul-Pyongyang relations have deteriorated sharply

This statement is the first explicit reference to the new US President Joe Biden,  from North Korea , which has nuclear weapons. During the term of Donald Trump, the exchanges of insults and threats of war had been held with Kim Jong Un, before pursuing a diplomatic honeymoon marked by peaks between dirigeants.Toutefois, this had not led to progress towards a denuclearization of North Korea, subject to multiple international sanctions because of its nuclear program.

The negotiations were conducted with the intermediary of Moon Jae-indu, the South Korean president. But relations between Seoul and Pyongyang have deteriorated sharply since the failure of the Kim-Trump summit in Hanoi in February 2019. Since then, some 28,500 US military personnel have been stationed in South Korea to protect it from a possible attack by Korea. North. Seoul and Washington, united by a military alliance, began computer-simulated military exercises last week. North Korea condemns this training, which it describes as preparation for an invasion.
