The sequel to the documentary series “Tiger King: In the Kingdom of the Wild”, which captivated millions of viewers cloistered because of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, will be broadcast in 2022, Netflix announced Thursday.
The series followed the shenanigans and setbacks of “Joe Exotic”, an openly gay and colorful zoo owner ruling over a menagerie of felines, wacky employees and whimsical lovers.
Real name Joe Maldonado-Passage, the “Tiger King” was sentenced to 22 years in prison for attempted murder and is currently in custody.
The first season of its misadventures was followed by 64 million homes around the world in the four weeks following its release, in March 2020.
“Tiger King 2” will be “even crazier and more chaotic”, promises Netflix, with a trailer where we can see Joe making a phone call from his prison as well as Carole Baskin, animal protector Joe had tried to get rid of.
Season 1 focused on the intense rivalry between Joe Exotic and Ms. Baskin, who for years accused the eccentric businessman of mistreating his beasts and vowed to bankrupt his zoo.
There were also crazy rumors there that Carole Baskin had her husband eaten by the tigers.
The latter denies any involvement in the disappearance of her husband.
In May, US authorities seized 68 wild animals housed in the zoo that belonged to Joe Exotic, now run by Jeffrey Lowe, Joe’s former partner, and his wife Lauren.
According to court documents, the wild animals were not fed, cared for, or sheltered adequately, so that three big cats under one year old have died of malnutrition, and two others in suspicious conditions, since September 2020.
Directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin remain in command of season 2 of “Tiger King”, described by Netflix as a “cultural phenomenon”.
