United States: the 3rd dose of Pfizer vaccine authorized for the elderly or at “risk”

The United States on Wednesday authorized the injection of a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine for people over 65 and those considered “at risk”.

Since Wednesday, September 22, the injection of a third dose of Pfizer’s vaccine against Covid-19 has been authorized in the United States. For the moment, it only concerns people 65 years of age and over and those at “risk”, including because of a job particularly exposing them to the virus.

The US Medicines Agency (FDA) said in a statement that the booster dose can be administered from six months after the second injection . This decision could include ”  health workers , teachers and school staff, workers in supermarkets and those in  homeless shelters  or prisons, and others,” said acting chief of the FDA, Janet. Woodcock, cited in the press release.

The FDA’s decision differs from what was announced by the government of  Joe Biden , who had assured that a large recall campaign for Pfizer and Moderna vaccines would be launched from the week of September 20, for all Americans eight months after their second injection.

The US moved a step closer Wednesday to offering booster doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine to senior citizens and others at high risk from the virus as the Food and Drug Administration signed off on the targeted use of extra shots.
